Ocean Cargo ShipIf you plan to ship your vehicle from port to port to Alaska, Hawaii, or to another country, there are a few tips that will help you to prepare.  First of all you should know that shipping your car in a closed container is more expensive, but will protect it from damage caused by the environment like salt, dust and sand.

Get several quotes from shipping companies, prices can vary quite a bit from one company to another and many times the price is negotiable.

Have an extra set of keys ready to drop off with your car, you will need to provide a key to the car, trunk, and all compartments.

Provide the original registration and title, the company should make copies for their records and give you back the originals.

If you have an auto loan or lease your car, you may need to provide a notarized letter from your creditor or leasing company stating that they are aware you are shipping the car.

You won’t be allowed to pack or store any items in the car during shipping.

Most companies require that you only have a quarter of a tank of gas when the car is put into the container because gas is flammable.

All alarm systems on your car are usually required to be disconnected before your car is dropped off.

If you are shipping a car to Alaska make sure your battery and radiator are winterized to prevent freezing during transport.

Your car must be cleaned, both the interior and exterior, before shipping, most companies are very strict, because of import standards regarding agriculture.

You must show a photo ID when picking up your car.

You are prohibited to ship firearms in your vehicle during transport.
