Questions to Ask When Buying a Used Car

This entry was posted in Used Car Dealers

Frustrated ManPlanning to buy a car from one of your local used car dealers?  Here are some tips to help you make a more informed decision, make a list of the top priorities you have in selecting your new car, then don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you want, be assertive and stick to your bottom line.  Here are some other ideas of things you may want to consider or add to your list;

Does the car have a certification of inspection from a mechanic?  You can ask to see the document that states what work has been done to the car after it was purchased from the previous seller.

Ask if you can see a Car Fax that will give you all the pertinent information on the history of the car’s mechanical or collision issue if any.  Most reputable dealerships do supply this information.

Ask who the previous owner was and if there are maintenance records.

Was the car purchased at an auction?  If so, make sure that a certified mechanic has inspected it thoroughly and that there is paperwork that you can see to ensure that it has been performed.

Ask to see a list of repairs and services that have been done on the car since the trade in or purchase.

Is there an extended service contract on the car, and if not can I purchase one with the dealership?

Are there any return policies on the car?

Ask to take the car for a long test drive, not just a 10 minute drive around the block.  Some dealerships will even let you drive the car home over night provided that you show proof of insurance.

Don’t be afraid to offer less than the dealership has the car listed for, and/or to ask for some additional services to be thrown into the deal, for example if the car will be needing any major maintenance in the near future.
