  • Use a pet seatbelt, there are many different designs available today which involve a harness and strap that is secured to the car seat belt.  If your dog likes to lay down in the car, this option may not be the best one as the dog needs to sit up to be safely restrained. Check to make sure the belt you select has been crash tested.
  • If you have an SUV or a station wagon, try using a divider to contain the dog in the back of the vehicle which will prevent him/her from being catapulted to the front of the automobile toward the windshield if the driver has to slam on the brakes or if there is an impact from a car accident. This is also an optimal solution to having to watch the dog in the car when the driver needs to keep his eyes on the road.
  • A dog crate can be used to contain your pet for safety while driving.  This option works well if your dog has a chewing problem and needs constant supervision to keep her from chewing up and swallowing materials in the car that could cause illness.  Make sure that the crate is secure and won’t fly around in case of an accident.
  • There are many different types of doggie car seats on the market, but for optimal safety it is recommended to combine the use of a harness style seatbelt.
